I can set up a network solution for you from a simple Peer-to-Peer network for your home to a Server technology setup for your business.

I can install and configure routers, Wireless networks, Internet connection sharing, networked storage, networked backup and perform security auditing.

Home networks:

A home network can be used for:

    • Sharing files between computers
    • Sharing an Internet connection
    • Sharing printers, scanners, cameras
    • Using network storage
    • Entertainment (networked games, media etc.)

What’s the difference between a “home” and a “business” network?

It depends on the size and needs of the business!
Broadly speaking, home networks are commonly “Peer to peer” networks, where all computers on the network perform the same roles.

Larger business networks are often “Client / Server” networks, where one computer acts as a Server and the other computers on the network can access its resources.
The “Client” machines in this type of network may be stand-alone computers or they may be simply terminals used to access the Server.

In this type of network the Server is the central repository of data and can also be an “Application server” where programs such as Spreadsheets, Databases etc physically reside.

The advantages of this type of network are numerous, some of them are:

    • Software upgrades only need to be performed on the server
    • Security administration is centralized
    • Fosters a collaborative workspace
    • Remote access to large quantities of data

If this is such a good setup, why don’t I use it at home?

    • Complexity – Client/Server networks require a lot of specialized knowledge to set up and maintain
    • Cost – The software and operating systems needed for this type of network are expensive compared to a simple home network.
